Overall, this last semester was full of accomplishments and great performance by the SJSU Men's Soccer Club. The boys began only their second semester of being a club and they certainly continued to excel on and off the pitch. After finishing second place in league of the spring 2018 season, and qualifying for the regional tournament for the first time in history, the Men's Soccer Club was eager to begin the new season. They ended the fall season of 2018 with an overall record (5-6-2), and once again placed second in their league. The Spartans also participated in the Aztec Cup where they reached the championship final, placing second as they lost against UC Irvine. Altogether, the team ended the tournament with a record of (3-0-2).
Because the Spartans ended second place in league, the team qualified for Regionals, which was hosted at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. They began the tournament with a very tough loss of 3-0 to the home team, Cal Poly SLO. Despite the rough start, the team managed to regroup and beat Sonoma State and UCSB, in order to make club history by being the first club team at SJSU to qualify for Nationals. The Spartans trained for three weeks before they flew to Foley, Alabama, where they competed among the top schools in the country. Unfortunately, the turnout was not what they expected, as they failed to make their way out of the group stage. Despite the outcome, it was a significant accomplishment to qualify for the tournament and get a grasp of what it is like competing at that level. This will go on to motivate the team so they can go further and do better the upcoming season.
With that being said, The Men's Club Soccer team will be hosting tryouts on Monday 1/28 and Wednesday 1/30 from 8:30 PM to 10:00PM, Tuesday 1/29 and Thursday 1/31 from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM for the Spring 2019 season at the CEFCU Stadium. Although tryouts start at 7:00 and 8:30, it is recommended that you get there earlier, so that you can check in, pay the $10 fee, and have a proper warm up. The team is aiming to bring in talented, hard-working, and competitive people in order to continue where they left off the Fall 2018 season.
