Why YOU Should Join the Team

We are proud to be one of the most inclusive and welcoming teams around!

Are you a just a girl at SJSU who's looking to get involved on campus and make new friends?!

Well look no further than the Women's Rugby Club!

Joining this team is a fantastic opportunity for any student who is looking to be part of something bigger. Here, we foster a welcoming culture where everyone, regardless of experience, is encouraged to join the group.

Never played rugby before? No problem! Never heard of rugby before? Well, now you have ;)

And never fret, for we will teach you the ropes with patience and you'll get the game down in no time! Together we will practice, learn and grow. (And hopefully win! We've qualified for both the 15's Playoffs and 7's Nationals several times in the past decade.) (If you don't know what 15's or 7's Rugby is, we will be happy to inform you at your first practice)

And it's not just about the game — we always strive to build a caring community where we all support one another both on and off the field. Plus, with regular practices and games, it's a really fun way to stay active, relieve stress, and maintain a healthy lifestyle. We are looking for individuals who are dedicated, down to earth, and willing to put in the work to help the team succeed. If this fits your vibe, please consider coming out to our practices! Again, we are very inclusive and we would love to have you. Whether you're looking to make lifelong friends, stay fit, or just try something new, the SJSU Women's Rugby Club is the perfect place to start! We hope to see you at practice :)

General FAQ:

When and how often do you play?
We have practice every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday night at 7-8:30 pm, and games take place on the     weekends, typically on Saturdays. We are fortunate enough to have access to the Club Sports Gym and so we also hold     weight room sessions a few times a week.

How does the season work?
For 15's rugby, fall semester is preseason, spring semester is league season. For 7's rugby, the qualifying
tournament is in the fall, and if we qualify, Nationals takes place in late spring.

Where do you play?
Our home field is the South Campus Recreation Field. It is across the street from SJSU's CEFCU Football Stadium and     right next to the 10th St. South Campus Garage! The address is 1278 S 10th St, San Jose, CA 95112.

Do you hold tryouts?
Nope! We do not have tryouts because everyone is welcome to join the team. No experience in rugby, or any specific     sport for that matter, is necessary.  We believe that everyone can be an amazing rugby player if you put in the time and     the dedication to improve. We would love to have you on the team.

What do I need to play?
You just need a mouthguard and a pair of cleats! We will take care of your jersey, shorts, and socks. You will also receive     a kit, which consists of our team merchandise! (Sweatpants, sweatshirt, t-shirt, backpack, and any other items from this     specific season).

How can I prepare if I don't know how to play?
I would suggest looking up the basic positions and rules of the game online or through Youtube videos. Once you've     learned how the game works and the roles that each player has, watching professional teams play both 15's and 7's     rugby will also be extremely helpful in fully understanding the game. This way, you can watch the plays develop in     action and can visualize yourself playing in their place. Don't let the roughness of the game scare you away though! I     swear it's not as bad or scary as it may seem when you watch the professionals do it. Practicing running on your own     time and/or lifting weights will also help you prepare for our practices and game play.
And the best way to join is just to show up! We are all kind and more than happy to explain things to you and to teach     you anything you need to know along the way!
