Who are we?

Established in 2013, San Jose Dragon Boat is a semi-competitive team that races all across the Bay Area and even out of state such as San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Tempe Arizona. We compete at a high level but are also beginner friendly, and our focus is to teach paddling fundamentals to all. Captains and coaches guide both new and experienced paddlers during on-water practice and workout sessions during the week. We are a very social club and host events regularly throughout both fall and spring semesters ranging from karaoke to barbecues. We also carry on team traditions like Friendsgiving, an annual banquet, and Friends & Family Day.

What is Dragon Boat?
Dragon boat originated over 2,000 years ago in southern China as one of many festivals in the region honoring water dragon deities. International races were held for the first time in Hong Kong in 1976, and since 1991 the sport has been regulated by the International Dragon Boat Federation. Teams paddle a long canoe-like boat, decorated with a dragon head and tail. Twenty paddlers, seated in pairs, move as one to propel the boat forward with their paddles. They are guided by the beat of a drummer and directed by a steer in the back of the boat who uses a special 9-foot oar.

Races are run on a standard 500 meter course, and range from 250 meters to 2,000. Each festival includes multiple divisions where teams can compete. SJDB usually competes in the mixed, women's, and open divisions. Dragon boat offers a unique opportunity to work as a team and build connections in the wider community beyond SJSU.
