What is Spartan Fencing?
With origins from one of the most prestigious college fencing programs in the country, Spartan Fencing is the current fencing program here at San Jose State University. Here at Spartan Fencing, we strive to promote the sport on campus and on the greater collegiate scene.

Â
What do we do?
Spartan fencing is not only just a competitive team, we also have the structure to teach and train Spartans who are new to the sport of fencing. Despite our drive for competition, we welcome fencers of all experience levels to make friends and stab them!
Â
Club Structure
At Spartan Fencing we structure our training around 2Â separate skill levels: beginner, and intermediate.
- Â Â Equipment will be provided for all levels of experience (We recommend bringing your own gear)
- Our beginner section, aims to introduce the basic fundamentals that are essential to the sport of fencing. This includes basic safety and etiquette, stance and footwork, and introductory weapons training. Beginners are taught in foil, one of the three weapons of fencing, which is the perfect platform to learn and practice many skills useful in the other two weapons.
- The intermediate section, is the next step up from the beginner section. Fencers here will continue to hone their fundamentals as well as be introduced to more concepts such as advanced footwork, advanced weapons training, and tactics and strategy. We welcome our intermediate level fencers to practice individually outside of practice time.  Â
