TODAY IN HISTORY: Five years ago today, SJSU goalie
Alexandre Gallardo had a shutout game, allowing zero goals against Saint Mary's. As an alumni, he now coaches for SJSU and coached us into getting another recent shutout game against Humboldt. To celebrate the achievement, we asked Alex a few questions:
What was your favorite memory as a player?
My favorite memory as a player is beating D1 Chico in CEFCU stadium.
What's your favorite memory as a coach?
My favorite memory as a coach is traveling to LA with the team.
How do you feel the team has progressed in the last 5 years?
I feel like the team culture is shifting compared to when I played. Players are holding each other more accountable and I think the team is very close, even choosing "Family" as our motto.
How different is it to experience a shutout as a player than to experience one as a coach?
When got my shutout I became hyper concentrated on not letting any goals in after about the 3rd quarter. I was itching to get subbed out and get a rep in at attack too.
When
Erik Rodriguez got his first college shutout I was very proud of him, especially after all the work he's been putting in. The next day when we played Sierra Nevada he made 20 saves!
What do you expect to see from the team over the next 5 years?
I expect the team the progress even more in the next 5 years. We have a great core group of guys. We do film sessions now, and the players have access to their own gym. We have 4 dedicated coaches. The tools are there we just need to use them.
Thank you Alex, and let's go Spartans!
