Slugs Surge in Muddy 4th Quarter

4/15/2007 12:49:00 PM

On a rainy day in San Jose the UCSC Slugs battled the Spartans. UCSC jumped out with 3 goals in under 3 minutes, then it was the Spartans turn as they scored the next 3, to end the first tied 3-3. UCSC went on to take a 5-4 lead into the half. The 3rd quarter was all Spartans, freshman Patrick Kauffman netted his first career goal to start the quarter and team founder, Patrick Burchfiel bookended the quarter with his 3rd goal of the game, giving the Spartans an 8-5 lead heading to the final frame. The Slugs dominated the 4th scoring 5 unanswered goals, taking a 10-8 lead. Spartan scoring leader Michael Nolan had his 3rd assist of the game on Walt Chu's 2nd goal, and in the closing seconds had his potential game eaqualizig shot glance off the UCSC goalie's helmet and sail agonizingly over the goal. San Jose State will complete the 2007 campaign with a home game Saturday, April 28 against the Humboldt State University Lumberjacks.
