This past Friday, the Men's Lacrosse team faced off against cross-town rival, the UC Santa Cruz Slugs for their final game of the regular season, which was also their senior night. To both the Spartans and the Slugs, this game meant just a little bit more than their usual rivalry match, as the winner of the game would progress forward to the Western Collegiate Lacrosse League Championship playoffs.
Fortunately though, the Spartans took a strong lead in the first quarter, going up 4-0. Which, despite their strong face-off performance, the Slugs struggled to recover from. The game would finish with the Spartans their longtime rivals 11-4, which will be sending the Spartans to the playoffs. The 2023 WCLL Championship Playoffs will be held on Saturday, April 29th at Los Gatos High School, the Spartan's first-round opponents are yet to be determined.
Strong performances came from midfielder
Dominic Costa, who scored 4 goals with 3 assists and 7 ground balls, and Goalie
Erik Rodriguez, who saved an astonishing 17 shots leading to an 81% save rate. Their strong performances would not go nationally unnoticed, as both players would go on to receive a spot on the MCLA's Player of the Week Honor Roll and Goalie of the Week Honor Roll, respectively.
After the game, to celebrate their largest graduating class in several years, the Spartan's seniors were honored with photographs and a few quick words to their teammates.
